Keeping children safe in education: proposed revisions 2020

Closed 31 Mar 2020

Opened 25 Feb 2020

Overview

This consultation has been withdrawn permanently

We want schools and colleges to be able to focus their efforts on responding to the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore the 2020 Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) consultation which was suspended on 31 March 2020 has been withdrawn permanently.

The majority of the revisions proposed in the consultation version will be reconsidered for future updates of KCSIE.

There are a small number of revisions that we have made and will come into force on 1 September 2020. These fall into three categories:

  • those that reflect legislative changes and as such are essential to ensure the guidance remains accurate
  • those that provide additional helpful support and information, such as on mental health and children in need
  • important clarifications which will help the sector better understand and/or follow our guidance

A summary of changes can be found at Annex H of KCSIE which was published for information on 17 June 2020.

Keeping children safe in education (KCSIE) 2019 remains statutory guidance. Guidance for schools and colleges to support them keeping children safe, including online, during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is available and should be read alongside KCSIE.

Why your views matter

We are consulting on a wide variety of proposed changes to KCSIE. The aim is to help schools and colleges to better understand what they are required to do by law and what we strongly advise they should do in order to meet their safeguarding responsibilities.

Many of the proposed changes are technical in nature and are intended to improve the clarity of the guidance and ensure consistency throughout. A copy of the draft guidance is included and a full list of changes we are proposing to make is included at Annex G of this guidance.
