Setting up the School Support Staff Negotiating Body (SSSNB)

Closes 18 Jul 2025

Introduction

Welcome to the consultation. Thank you for taking the time to complete this — your views are important to us.

This consultation is divided into the following sections:

  • About you

We ask a few questions to understand who is responding. This helps us analyse the responses by respondent type and ensure we’ve heard from a broad range of perspectives. These questions are integrated into the flow of the consultation but remain separate from the main policy topics.

  • Definition of 'school support staff'

This section explores who should be included in or excluded from the School Support Staff Negotiating Body (SSSNB), and how key staff groups should be defined.

  • Call for evidence on current arrangements

This section gathers information on how pay, terms and conditions are currently set for school support staff. This will inform the transition to the SSSNB process.

  • Agency workers

We ask for views on whether agency workers should be included in the SSSNB in the future and, if so, what the impacts of this may be.

  • Equality impacts

We ask whether you think our proposals could have a positive or negative impact on people with protected characteristics (such as age, disability, race or sex). This will help us meet our duties under the Equality Act 2010 and inform a full equality impact assessment.

With the exception of a small number of required questions — such as those asking whether you are responding as an individual or on behalf of an organisation, your role type, and privacy-related questions — all other questions are optional. You are welcome to skip any questions that you do not wish to answer, or answer 'N/A'.

While we have taken care to provide relevant information alongside each question, we strongly recommend reading the full consultation document at the following link: SSSNB consultation document
