We're seeking views on updates to guidance to strengthen how schools support pupils with medical conditions and allergy.

Why your views matter

We are consulting on proposed updates to the statutory guidance Supporting pupils with medical conditions at school. The consultation seeks views on how schools can better support pupils with a wide range of medical conditions, including allergy, and create safe, inclusive environments.

We also want to understand how training, individual healthcare plans, incident reporting and learning from near misses can be strengthened. Your responses will help us finalise revised guidance for schools and inform wider work to improve safety, consistency and inclusion for children with medical needs.

What happens next

We will be using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to assist in analysing responses to this consultation. The purpose of using AI is to identify themes, trends, and insights more efficiently and accurately, ensuring that all feedback is considered in a structured and transparent way. AI will not make decisions; it will support our analysis process, which will be reviewed and validated by our team to maintain fairness and integrity.

All tools used will operate strictly within DfE’s data‑protection, security and ethical frameworks, and all analysis will fully comply with UK GDPR and Government data‑handling standards. No personal data will be shared with external organisations.
